{"id":1247,"date":"2019-04-11T11:00:43","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T09:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nature-conservation-ubfc.com\/emme\/?page_id=1247"},"modified":"2019-04-11T11:12:55","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T09:12:55","slug":"browsing-impacts-of-introduced-sambar-deer-rusa-unicolor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nature-conservation-ubfc.com\/emme\/en\/browsing-impacts-of-introduced-sambar-deer-rusa-unicolor\/","title":{"rendered":"Browsing impacts of introduced Sambar Deer (Rusa unicolor)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">in the Mountain Ash forests of the Victorian Central Highlands, Australia.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1256 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nature-conservation-ubfc.com\/emme\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/04\/sambar-deer-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/h1>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\">Internship host:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The Australian National University, Fenner School of Environment and Society<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\">Context:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The project will involve field work in the tall wet forests of Victoria\u2019s Central Highlands, monitoring the presence and impact of Sambar Deer (scats, browsed plants, tracks). <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\">Scientific objectives:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Objectives include: 1) Correlating deer presence with forest age, land tenure, high and low severity fire or logging impacts and other environmental topographic variables to determine where deer are most common and numerous; 2) What plant species are most impacted by browsing deer; 3) Impacts of deer browsing on plant regeneration after fire and logging; 4) Possible management action suggestions to land managers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\">Implementation terms (techniques, work to be done, workflow etc.):<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The project will link into an existing long term monitoring project with over 200 monitoring sites. Monitoring will involve visiting sites, conducting surveys, entering data and analysis. Work will primarily be conducted Monday-Friday with occasional weekend work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\">Desired skills:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Desired skills include\u00a0the ability to: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;list-style-type: disc\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">work unsupervised in a forest environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">observe and record data<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">speak, read and write in English<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">basic first aid skills (including treatment of snake bite) <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">navigation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">drive a manual 4WD car (not essential)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">operate a chainsaw (not essential)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">basic 4WD rescue techniques (not essential)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">general practical field skills.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> It is hoped the intern will also assist with other aspects of the long term monitoring work including surveying possums and gliders at night.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>in the Mountain Ash forests of the Victorian Central Highlands, Australia.
