{"id":1543,"date":"2019-10-02T09:29:43","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T07:29:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nature-conservation-ubfc.com\/bewm\/?p=1543"},"modified":"2019-10-02T10:15:27","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T08:15:27","slug":"seminar-by-josabel-belliure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nature-conservation-ubfc.com\/bewm\/en\/seminar-by-josabel-belliure\/","title":{"rendered":"Seminar by Josabel Belliure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00ab Behavioral and evolutionary approaches for animal conservation in Cuba \u00bb<\/strong> Josabel Belliure, Friday, October 11th 2019 at 11am,\u00a0 Monge room<\/p>\n<p>Conservation of the native fauna of Latin America is complex in global terms due to the great diversity of species, the scarcity of biological information for many of them, and the complexity of the ecosystems that sustain them; and we have to add multiple factors of social and economic order. Therefore, wildlife is widely used but poorly managed nowadays in the region. To improve the biological knowledge about emblematic species of the Cuban Archipelago for conservation decisions, we studied several ecological aspects of the Cuban Rock Iguana\u00a0(<em>Cyclura nubila<\/em>),\u00a0the Cuban\u00a0Hutia (<em>Capromys pilorides<\/em>), the\u00a0American Crocodile\u00a0(<em>Crocodylus acutus<\/em>), and the Cuban Crocodile (<em>C. rhombifer<\/em>) in different populations of the main island and cays of the Cuban\u00a0Archipelago. Morphological traits, reproductive behavior, and life habits were considered in the study. We found local singularities in several morphological\/behavioral aspects of the Iguana and the Hutia from different populations, and suggest adopting the\u00a0\u201cEvolutionary Significance Unit\u201d approach, that gives conservation value to populations that\u00a0presumably show adaptive differentiation, to define the appropriate geographic scale for monitoring and management of the species.
